A Typical
MAMAK Restaurant
Our Chairman once owned and operated Seremban's best and cleanest "Mamak"
restaurant. Unfortunately, because of Government corruption, she was forced to
sell.
""Mamak" is a term used in Malaysia to
refer to Indian Muslims. In many cases, Indian nationals migrated to Malaysia
either as Muslims or after some period, adopted the Islamic religion.
With them they brought Indian cuisine
adapting it to Malaysian tastes, to the extent that it is now largely, peculiar
to Malaysia and bears no resemblance to its origins.
This
"roti channai" with dahl curry and a teh tarik will cost RM3.60
An'nas Bistro is a Mamak shop
selling typical Mamak food which is very popular with all races in this country.
All food is halal and all workers are Muslim. However, this employment strategy
is only to satisfy ludicrous licensing laws. The company is owned by a Hindu
with a Christian husband.
Mamak food is tasty and cheap. It
varies from very spicy (padas) to mild so if you are not used to it, ask the
waiter. You can help yourself from the wide range of foods on display or order
from the menu.
Prices will vary from a minimum of US0.50
cents to a maximum of around US$2.00 for food, and drinks from 40 cents US to
a maximum of US$1.20.
Our restoran has been awarded a "B"
class for cleanliness which is quite unusual for mamak shops which generally, have
a sad reputation for cleanliness.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do; or
better still, when in Seremban --------
Here, when eating most Indian foods, people eat with their hands and
while spoons and forks are sometimes provided, most will tell you that the food
tastes better. Try it.
